Definition

A common mode of asexual reproduction in microorganisms whereby two (daughter) cells are formed by the growth and division of one cell. Transverse binary fission occurs when a cell divides across it's longitudinal axis. Longitudinal binary fission occurs when a cell divides along its longitudinal axis.
