Definition

A test used to determine if an organism is able to utilize citrate as a sole source of carbon and energy. The test consists of inoculating the test medium (normally Simmons' citrate agar) with a straight wire and subsequent incubation. Growth is considered a positive reaction (which may or may not be accompanied by a blue color change in Simmons' citrate agar). Part of the IMViC tests.
