In a broad sense, any lipid containing polysaccharide. However, this term often is used to refer to a component of the outer membrane in gram negative bacteria. In the latter sense, lipopolysaccharide consists of three covalently bonded regions; lipid A, core oligosaccharide, and an O specific chain.
