Definition

A small glass test tube open at one end that is used to detect gas production by microbes in liquid culture. A Durham tube is placed inverted within a test tube that is filled with liquid media, and the apparatus is then autoclaved (this drives all air from the Durham tube). After the media is inoculated and incubated any gas formed by the cultured microbes will be trapped within the Durham tube.
