Organized structures which contain or consist of DNA which carry genetic information essential to the cell.  Prokaryotes typically have one a single circular chromosome while eukaryotes typically have several linear chromosomes all located inside a nucleus. The term chromosome is also used to describe the DNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts.
