An ether of lactic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. One of the two alternating amino sugars which make up the structure of peptidoglycan (alternating units of N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine). Additionally, lactic acid residues of N-acetylmuramic acid serve as sites of cross linking between adjacent peptidoglycan strands.
