A spherical or near spherical cell. Coccus cells often resemble a sphere or globe, with all of the cell's surface being roughly equidistant from it's center. However, Cocci (p.) can also be more oval or egg shaped (see ovoid) and thus resemble an imperfect or swollen sphere. cocci which are elongated into short rod like shapes can be classified as coccobacilli (see coccobacillus).
